Kigali - Travel Day 1

As I awoke on our entry to Kigali, I looked out the window hoping to catch a glimpse of the Sahara desert in the sunset. But I saw nothing. A vast nothingness that extended as far as the eye could see, even only at 7pm. it was already pitch dark. As we approached I could see only a handful of twinkling lights dispersed in pockets with the occasional car driving between them. The lights were dim and man of them were flickering like the light from a camp fire which I thought some might be, although as we landed I could see they were just broken house and street lights fighting to shine.

The twinkling village lights of Rwanda with the occasional moving lone star car lights.

This was probably one of the strangest layovers in all my travels. We landed at Kigali International airport which looked rather bleak. Let off a large group of young missionaries from Arkansas and sat on the tarmac for 2 hours. The RwandAir cleaning team came aboard to clean the empty seats for new passengers getting on board. The cacophony of Dutch , French, English and Swahili was interesting and there were many pleasant interactions between our diverse passenger collecito as we waited to continue our journey to Nairobi. I made friends with my seat Neighbor James, a Kenyan who happens to live in Anaheim (go figure), we exchanged a friendly chat, although I am not sure if it was because I was watching Metalocalypse throughout the whole flight or I just have one of those faces that looks like it needs to be saved, but he felt compelled to enlighten me on giving myself to Jesus. I felt compelled to enlighten him on the fact that we are not from this planet. He was very open to my Alien theories.

Turbulence - Travel Day 1

A rather bumpy start to the journey almost left me high and dry in LA for good and for a second there I almost felt this trip fall out the palm of my hand.

I have this to say to United Airlines.

Due to either the incompetence in human communication, the English language or both, your personelle manning the information booth at baggage check are rude, more unhelpful than the TSA and I am sure have cost many of your flyers a lot of unnecessary hassle, and from what I saw this morning, a lot of missed flights! I missed the first flight ever in my flying career due to your staff not doing their jobs correctly and your company so over selling all of your flights that customer service is virtually non existent.

With only a few short hours to spare on my first layover, it's nothing short of a miracle that I managed to get onto the next fully booked flight to Newark an make my first international connection by a hair! To that one helpful person in a sea of cold hearted disregard I thank you. Although my allegiance to the star alliance has been somewhat diminished today.

So the turbulence has subsided and the seat belt sign is off, we are back on track and ready to hit the Atlantic crossing.

Signing off from the USA

The Invite

This will be the first time I have attended a tradtional Indian wedding, and its rather daunting when your invitations' (yes, plural) arrive in a nice little box and your gracious bride friend notifies you that you should really book a vacation after the wedding... And when I say daunting, I mean completely overwhelmed with excitement.

A traditional Indian wedding is spread out over 6-8 days. Events and rituals are celebrated such as:

Satsang and Kurmai - Bangle ceremony.

The Formal Engagement - I believe this is the grooms formal marriage proposal?

Sangeet - "Bachelorette" party. The word Sangeet is Sanskrit meaning "sung together".

Mehndi Ceremony - This is an entire day dedicated to getting Henna!!! :D

The Wedding Ceremony - Elephants maybe? Or maybe I watch too much TV.

I am sure I will be able to elaborate much more on these traditions after I have experienced them first hand!

A beautiful gold monogramed box arrived in the mail a few weeks ago....

Inside where three separate event invitations, all adorned with gold trim, embossed text and very subtle illustrations themed to the specific event of that invitation.

All in all, a pretty epic invite collection!! My design hat approves.

The Reason

This beautiful little dumpling here is the reason I am treking it half way around the globe... To celebrate her wedding in true indian/african style with 6 days of dancing, drinking, henna, and food... lots and lots of food!
